Esme sighed as she ran her fingers through her golden hair. She knew that Bree had lost control, hence why she was pacing outside the room she was sure Bree resided in.
Esme had always felt that her job was to protect her adoptive children. She was a stay at home mother, so she didn't find any excuse not to do the best she could possibly be. If she didn't do well, she would beat herself up until Carlisle caught up on it and it started a conversation she hated so much. He made her feel guilty for actually feeling guilty! She had no idea how her husband could do that, but he most certainly could.
She sighed as she fixed her statue and made sure her back was perfectly straight. Much like her daughters, she was as graceful as any human being could possibly be.
Esme was about to rattle her knuckles on Bree's bedroom door, when she thought the best of it and headed down stairs.
Esme had been through all of this, so she had no idea why she was so worried then! Still, she also knew that Carlisle probably had already had 'the talk' with Bree about becoming a Cullen, and what it meant.
Still, Esme finally shook those thoughts out of her head permanently...at least, long enough not to back down once she walked up the stairs, and finally knocked her pale knuckles on the wooden door.
"Bree?" she asked, her silvery voice with her motherly instinct showing. "Bree, darling? Its me. Its Esme" she said, unsure whether Bree was already ready to call her 'mother', like the rest of her children were. She doubted it though. "Can I come in?"

- - - - - - - - ❧ - - - - - - - - • • • • • we are just M I S G U I D E D G H O S T S - - - - - - - - ❧ - - - - - - - - Bree had her head in her hands with her shoulders haunched. She had done it again. She wasn't meant to be a Cullen, a fact that had once again been proven by her latest attack on Bella. She wasn't worthy and she knew that now. All the people here were so kind and generous that they'd opened their home to her without a second thought. They'd even given Bree her own room with a drawer full of new clothes and a loveseat that she was currently resting on. And what did she do in return? She had tried to kill her friend and family member. Twice. Had Bree been able to cry in her vampire body, she would have been crying at that moment. Instead she thought of everything wrong that she'd done in her short time with the Cullens, waiting silently for the tears that would never come.
Bree didn't realise that anyone was outside her room until someone knocked on the door and announced her presence. It was Esme, the mother of the Cullen family. She had always been so kind to Bree, always offering help, clothes, advice and whatever other things Bree might need. Esme had asked to come in, and there was no doubt what Bree's answer would be. Firstly, she didn't want to hurt the nice lady's feelings, and secondly, Bree needed the advice from a mother figure now more than any other moment in her life.
"Of course you can come in, Esme. You don't have to ask. This is your house after all." Bree said soflty, but she knew Esme would have no trouble hearing her.
In a flash, Bree composed her facial features before Esme entered the room. Bree's face no longer showed any trace of the pain she had been going through moments before. Her red eyes were free of any emotion, her whole face covered with a steady mask of indifference.

Esme sighed as she opened the door gently to see her new-born daughter, that hadnt been changed by Carlisle like she had wanted her to be. No. She had been changed by the same female who had almost killed Bella and had almost ruined their lives. If she had succeeded in killing Bella, then she would have ruined Edward, and with that, would've ruined Esme & Carlisle too...and everybody else in the family.
Esme had never hated any one in her life, even her ex-abusive husband, and her parents who had pushed her into that relationship. However, she hated Victoria so much. It was unheard of Esme ever wanting to kill anybody, until they had harmed her family in any way. Once that happened, she would show no mercy and slaughter them with out thinking twice, until afterwards, where she would beat herself up again.
Esme finally saw Bree's facial expression and smiled slightly. She knew that she was hurting, so she finally sighed and just walked into the room, sitting on the floor across from Bree.
"How're you honey? Feeling any better?" Esme asked, as motherly & compasionate as she could. She remembered Jasper, and the trouble he still had with staying away from humans blood.
That was why she was here, just to let Bree know it wasn't her fault, that Bella would be sure to understand, and that Edward would come around, just like he had done with Jasper, who had lost control while Bella had been around.
That was her job, her role in her family...
And she was going to do it RIGHT!

- - - - - - - - ❧ - - - - - - - - • • • • • we are just M I S G U I D E D G H O S T S - - - - - - - - ❧ - - - - - - - - Bree looked up at the kind gentle Esme as she asked if she wanted to talk. Her voice was so strong with compassion and an obvious motherly overtone. Bree was taken aback by this, as she'd never had a mother. Well, she did have a mother, but she ran off when Bree was very little. Even when she was human the memories were hazy, and now the details were even more hard to define as if she were looking a gauze. The only thing Bree knew about her mother was that she didn't like the abuse that she got from her husband, and that was the primary reason she'd left. Bree wondered where her mother was today, but it would be certain to say that it wouldn't be safe for the human if they met up again.
Bree responded to Esme's concern after only a small delay. She still held the steady mask, but her voice left some of the pain unconcealed. "I'm fine." she lied, but felt bad about lying to her adoptive mother. Bree knew how betrayed she had felt when she'd found out the tonnes of lies Riley had told her, the biggest about her best friend, and maybe something more. The rage she'd kept bottled up all these weeks was beginning to bubble to the surface, and she didn't want to take it out on Esme. Bree took a deep breath to calm herself, thankful for the human-free air supply, and looked into the woman's golden eyes as she told the truth.
"I feel so guilty." Bree said softly, looking into her open hands. She wished that somehow her hands could provide some sort of miracle to help her through this tough time. She wished that there was some way for her to learn to be a Cullen quicker, if if she could just skip the newborn years altogether.
A feeling that she'd never felt in so long came to Bree's attention. She wanted advice, she wanted to tell someone about the things that were bothering her. To get it off her chest, as others might have called it. The next words came out of Bree's mouth in a rush, but she knew Esme would catch them all. "Bella's my friend, and every time I go near her, I put her in so much danger. We used to just communicate through text, but I keep pushing myself. I want to be able to be her friend without..." her voice trailed off as her mouth filled with venom, but she swallowed it back quickly. "It's really hard."

((Thats my fav lay out! I usually use it on other sites xD Ill edit my posts to show a layout Esme looked at her adoptive 'daughter', hating that Bree felt like she had to lie to her. Esme knew that it would be hard for her to open up, but Esme had never had so much of a problem getting people to open up to her, considering how kind she had always been. Esme thought back to her lbood related son, and wonered what he would've been like if he hadnt died of a lung infection just days after being brought into the world. Esme blamed her ex-husband, that she had never truly told Carlisle about...He had never asked, so she had never felt the need to tell him about the abuse, she herself, had went through. Now, she was the wife of the most caring vampire, and gentleman in history. And that was saying something. Esme shook her head as she heard Bree's first reply, only consisting of two words. She shook her head then sighed. "No...Dont try to tell me that. I indeed know that youre not" she said, leaning forwards and placing a strand of her newest adoptive daughters hair behind her ear. Esme's soft eyes looked into Bree's with a sad smile to compliment them. "However, Im here for you, when ever you need me to be" Esme insisted, hoping that Bree would open up and tell her. Esme hated to see Bree in pain, even though it hadn't been long since she had met her. Esme really did already care for the girl, just like she did for the rest of the family. The compassionate women would do anything to take away the pain Bree was feeling, even if she needed to inflict it on herself. She always athered to be in pain, than see others in pain. It was part of her enhanced compassion that she had always had. However, now it was stronger. Finally, Bree spoke again and she smiled gently, sadness still in her eyes, however they were soft, just like the gold she had. She bit her lip as she just listened, almost feeling the pain. Now, she understood the almost torture Jasper had to go through every day, especially when he was near Bree. It would've been horrible. All the guilt & rage coming off of Bree was dangerous, and not just to her, but everyone around her. Esme knew she needed help, and she was going to give her that help. "Oh, Bree, darling!" she said, and then shook her head. "Bella understands Im sure...And I know how much you hate this...but soon, you'll never be tempted again, just like my husband." she said, and then moved over to sit next to her, and was now able to run her fingers through Bree's hair, just like a loving mother would whenever it was needed. "I understand its really hard. However, it will be worth it. Being a vampire isnt a horrible, and neither is being a new born. Just give it som time...Everything will work out some day" she insisted. words; 500

- - - - - - - - ❧ - - - - - - - - • • • • • we are just M I S G U I D E D G H O S T S - - - - - - - - ❧ - - - - - - - - Bree flinched away from Esme a little when she saw her place her hand up near her face. In Bree's old world, that meant an attack. She was pleasantly surprised when the kind vampire delicately tucked a stray piece of Bree's hair back in place. She was touched as Esme said she was there for her no matter what, and a non-existant warmness spread through her dead heart. The heat was all in her head, but the feeling behind it was truly there.
Bree looked into Esme's soft, gold eyes. Behind those eyes were the tales of a generous, kind, compassionate woman who hated to see conflict in her family. Bree could tell they would get along just fine.
Esme spoke again, this time she said that both she and Bella understand her situation. Bree severely hoped Bella did, and hoped that she wasn't scared of her. To Bella, watching Bree could be like looking through a crystal ball at her future. Bree was struggling being a veggie vamp, but she really was trying. She prayed that Bella wasn't scared of becoming a vampire. It was incredibly selfish, but Bree wanted Bella to become a vampire so her transition to a Cullen wouldn't be as stressful.
Esme's words trailed on in her delicate silvery voice, and Bree listened intently to every word. She needed the advice from someone older and more experienced, and that's what she was getting. When Esme spoke of Carlisle, Bree could see the adoration and love for her husband clear in her eyes. It was so pure and true that Bree felt intrusive and had too look away from Esme's eyes' golden depths.
Esme moved from her place in the middle of the room to sit next to Bree, every movement with utmost grace. Bree still stared forward, but was a little shocked once more when she felt Esme's fingers in Bree's hair again. She didn't understand the kind vampire's motherly instincts, but she didn't shy away from it. It felt... nice. Esme continued to talk, her last sentence was 'everything will work out some day,' and Bree sighed. That some day could be any time at all. Bree really had no idea when things would sort out or she'd be able to be in the same room as a human.
"How long did it take you... to, um, be able to control yourself?" Bree asked softly, knowing she had a deadline. Bella's wedding. Bree had no idea how long it would take for her eyes to change to yellow or her to be able to control herself, but she prayed that it was before the wedding. She knew Bella wanted her to go, and she knew it was going to be hard. One hundred humans, all unarmed and helpless with beating hearts... It made Bree thirsty. She really wanted to go to the wedding for Bella and Edward, but she didn't want to risk the lives of so many humans. Only time would tell.

Esme noticed Bree flinch away, and it made her non-beating heart ache. She wished that she had only gotten there before Victoria had gotten her hands onto Bree...She had no idea of the pain that Bree had went through before then either...she had absolutely no idea. Otherwise, she wouldn't just be running her fingers through her hair, but hugging her newest adoptive daughter to her, and never let go. No matter what would happen. Esme hated the thought that some one had laid there hands on some one so innocent. It made Esme sick to the stomach, and brought out anger & hatred.
Esme enjoyed the few seconds silence, and looked into Bree's eyes, and found so much hurt & dislike for herself in them. It wasnt right for such a beautiful, and kind young women to feel that way about herself, just because some venom had escaped into her body, and had turned her into a vampire.
Like Esme had told Edward so many times before, it didnt matter what you were, you would always have a soul if you chose to have one. She just wanted to tell Bree that, and knew that she would before the conversation was over.
Esme sighed at her question, and seemed to think about it. "Im honestly not sure...I know that it wasnt long, as I had never fed on human blood...and had been taken to feed on an animal the moment I had opened my eyes again..." she admitted. "It will be longer for you to be almost immune to humans blood...but Im sure, that if you really want to, by Bella's wedding, you'll be able to control yourself like Jasper can..." she insisted and sighed once more.
"I know it might not seem like much...but you would be surprised" she insisted and then nodded her head. "I have complete faith in you" she continued, and then spoke yet again. "I believe that anythings possible, as long as you truly want it. Believe me..." she said, and then looked into Bree's eyes.
"Here, Ill let you in on a little secret that I havent even told my husband..." she insisted and nodded her head.
"When I had been human, my parents had practically forced me into marrying this man...Charles. I remember him perfectly. And it was because he had been abusive...In fact, if I hadnt been turned into a vampire, Im sure I would still have the scars he had left on me...Anyway, he had went off to war, and when I had heard about that, I had been so happy! The thought of him dying in war, meant that I could be left to mend the pieces of my heart by myself, and I could run away Howeve,r he survived, and came back to be even more abusive" she said, and nodded her head.
"Finally, I had been beaten an inch from death, and had realized I needed to get out of there...As soon as I did, however, I realized I was pregnant with his child. Unfortunately, he died a few days later of a lung infection...I had wanted to die. In fact, I had jumped off a cliff and had been an inch from death before Carlisle changed me..." she trailed off.
"Now however, I had always beleived that things would go all right, I willed them too! And they did. Now, I have six adoptive children, if you want to be one of them, and a husband who would do anything for me. Ontop of that, I can be around humans."
"The story is, that if you want it to happen, it will happen. It might take a while, and longer htan you wanted it to...but it will happen" she insisted with a soft smile.

- - - - - - - - ❧ - - - - - - - - • • • • • we are just M I S G U I D E D G H O S T S - - - - - - - - ❧ - - - - - - - - Bree waited patiently as Esme thought of her answer. She frowned when Esme said she hadn't tasted human blood. Bree guessed that it would be easier to enter vegetarianism if she hadn't had human blood before. She certainly had, many, many times. The taste was still imprinted in her memory as if someone had used a branding iron. The sour taste of an alcoholic's, the bitter taste of a druggie's, but the warm, sweet taste of normal human blood was best...
Jeez, no wonder Bree was having trouble controlling herself! She couldn't even keep her thoughts from darting off in another direction, always resulting in the pooling of venom in her mouth and the dry, burning ache in her throat. She breathed in deeply, finding the floral scent of her new mother oddly comforting and calming.
Esme continued and said that she believed in Bree, that she could do it if she set her mind to it. If only Bree believed in herself, too. Her whole human life revolved around feeling unwanted and the majority of her second life being used as a pawn in someone else's battle. She'd lost the first person she'd cared deeply about before the war even started, and had probably lost the friendship of Fred after that stupid night. It was so much to lose in such little time. It should be expected that Bree wouldn't believe in herself.
It was then when Esme launched into her story, a story that she hadn't even told Carlisle. Because of this, Bree paid utmost attention to her words, knowing that they were important.
Esme spoke of a human life very different to the immortal life she led today. To Bree's intense surprise, Esme had lived in a similar environment to her. Abuse, but this time from her first partner, Charles, who her parents had forced her to wed. He had nearly killed her with his assults. A new, violent hatred bubbled up Bree's throat, for once overtaking the burn. Who the hell did this human think he was? It was wrong to abuse women, let alone Esme who wouldn't hurt a fly.
These emotions then changed to pity, empathy and understanding when she spoke of her poor baby. Finally Bree was able to understand Esme's maternal instinct, why she had adopted so many vampires into the family and why she had a mother-like bond with each and every one. She didn't know the extent of the feelings, but she now knew the reason behind it. Poor, poor Esme. Bree suddenly felt her story was inadequate in response to that. Bree didn't think she'd ever be able to comprehend how it felt to lose a child, due to her body frozen forever as a fifteen year old, but she imagined how horrible it would be.
"I'm really sorry to hear that." Bree mumbled, not really sure what else she could say. She'd never been good with expressing herself, and that didn't change when she became immortal. "I can't imagine how that would have felt..." She was glad that Esme now had Carlisle. Bree knew how happy they made each other and that they would do anything to keep it that way. Esme had recieved her happy ending, just like she knew she would. Would Bree get her happy ending?
In response to Esme's comment about six adoptive children, rather than just five, Bree smiled for the first time in days. Esme was her mother, the only mother she'd ever had. She was eternally grateful. "Yes, I'd like that."
Bree looked into the kind woman's eyes again, this time sensing that since she had shared her life story, Bree should too. Bree breathed in deeply, using the scent of her new mother to calm her again, and began. The words rushed and ran into each other again, she just wanted to get it all out as quickly as she could.
"My mother left when I was really little because of abuse, and when she was gone, that abuse was then passed to me. The week before I became like this," - Bree gestured to her pale, vampire body - "I ran away. I was then tricked by Riley" - her voice distorted in anger, but composed it - "who took me to Victoria to change me. They put us in houses that would collapse so frequently that one more dwelling was needed every day. We were lied to. They lied to us about the sun, about the Cullens, and they lied to me about..." Bree swallowed, trying to get the name out. "Diego."

Esme shook her head. "Dont be...sure, its sad...but its gotten me where I am, and I know my son is some where alot more better than what I could have ever given him, being a single mother. I wouldn't have been with Carlisle otherwise...and he wouldn't have given Edward the mother he missed so much" she insisted and nodded her head.
Esme sighed as she listened, then couldn't help but grin as she heard Bree's response in regarding whether or not she officially wanted to be known as 'her child'. Esme couldn't remove the smile from her face. However, what she said next, most certainly did to say the least!
Esme started to just run her fingers through Bree's hair gently, knowing she would have cried if she had still been human. However, she wasnt, and that was the only thing stopping her from letting out a stream of tears. She continued to listen to Bree, holding her newest child to her, and it looked like she wouldn't be ready to let go for quite a while.
She bit her lip and then ran continued to run her fingers through Bree's hair before she finally spoke. "Oh, darling...Im so sorry! Really, I am...no one, especially not some one as angelic as you deserves to be put through that. But its all right now. Its okay" she insisted, and placed both of her arms around Bree.
"However, I do have one question, that you dont need to answer if you dont want to..." she inssited and sighed. "Who is...Diego?" she asked, and just looked at her daughter, down into her red eyes that she hoped some day soon, would turn copper, just like the rest of her family.

She looked down at her hands again, somehow still expecting salty tears to fall down into them as if she were still human. She closed her eyes, her mouth set in a permanent frown.
"You mean... who was Diego..." Bree said in a soft voice full of grief, emphasising the word was. "He was like my best friend... And so much more... We figured out that Riley had been lying to us... He'd told us that the sun would burn us just to keep us under control." Bree found herself only able to talk in small sentences with a breath in between, the breath symbolising the sobs that would have followed if she were human. "Diego went to tell Riley that he had been wrong... Diego said he'd be fine because Riley had respect for him more than the others... But to Victoria he was just a tool for doing her dirty work..." Bree paused. This was the hard bit. "Diego was... He was killed because he knew things that Victoria didn't want any newborn to know..." Tearless sobs scaped Bree's mouth, and she tried to swallow them back hard. She felt as if she couldn't show weakness to any vampire, no matter if they were kind like Esme. It made Bree feel that she was weak and inadequate if she was weak.

At that, she bit her lip and listened in, just like she had before. She knew she wanted to help Bree get over the greif, but she also knew that you could never completely 'get over' losing some one, to put it in that way. It had been over a hundred years, and she still missed her husband.
Esme picked up on Bree's short breaths, that were equivelent to sobs or tears for vampires. She knew this was painful for her to talk about, and soon enough, she found out why. Esme hugged her newest daughter to her and started to run her fingers through Bree's hair again, placing her head ontop of Bree's in the most comforting way she could. "Im so sorry Bree...Im sorry you had to go through that. Really, I am" she said, then continued. "Still...he's in a better place, Im sure..." she said andnodded her head before pulling back. "He's in a safer place now. I know that he is" she said and nodded her head again.

- - - - - - - - ❧ - - - - - - - - • • • • • we are just M I S G U I D E D G H O S T S - - - - - - - - ❧ - - - - - - - - Bree's choking sobs still continued, and she stared at the white walls of her room. It was quite weird to be able to cry without her vision becoming all blurry. She covered her eyes with her hands, and tried to banish the tearless sobs that were escaping from her body. Bree thought it was wrong for vampires to cry. They were supposed to be like warriors who don't show weakness and stand tall through thick and thin. The way Bree was acting at that moment didn't fit that description. She cut off her breathing and tried to focus on Esme's hands running through her hair again.
Bree grimaced when Esme said Diego was in a better place. Bree didn't believe in heaven or hell in the first place, especially for vampires. Even if heaven and hell existed, Diego would have gone to hell for the people he'd killed in his short second life. Bree started to feel like she was choking again, and she tried to keep her mouth shut.
Bree kind of regretted talking about Diego. Sure, it made her feel better in a way to 'get it off her chest', but talking about it brought back all the memories and the feelings that she'd been trying to suppress for the past few weeks, or months. She didn't know how long she'd been here. It'd gone by in the blink of an eye, just like Diego did... Once Bree started thinking about Diego, she couldn't stop.
Bree clutched her head with her hands and squeezed her eyes shut, her fingers making her hair go in all different directions. She rubbed her head for a few seconds, and relaxed a little. She looked up again, and tried to smile to Esme, but she knew her smile didn't reach her eyes. Her eyes were so full of pain that even Bree didn't understand herself. All she knew was that Diego was gone, and it freaking hurt.
"Thank you, Esme." Bree said softly, trying to be brave. Her voice was a little hoarse from her 'crying', so it didn't have the effect she was hoping for. She swallowed before she tried to speak up more this time. "Thank you for so much. For letting me into your home, for letting me borrow your clothes." Bree's eyes and expression, though grave, showed that she was thankful for more than those things. "I don't know how to repay you." Bree sighed, all the while trying to block the thoughts of Diego out of her mind again.

Esme knew that Bree didnt believe in heaven, although she had no idea what it would mean if he did. She ran her fingers through Bree's hair once more before she just shook her head as she started to thank her. Esme hoped that Bree knew she didnt need to thank her, or give her & her family anything back. Esme knew she would do anything for a stranger, especially one in need like Bree. She would do anything. Literally.
Now Bree was apart of the family, and because of this, Esme felt the need to protect her. From everything. She sighed and ran her fingers through her hair before she spoke again. "Please, dont thank me. Its the least I could do for my daughter" she said, then leaned back just to look down at her and smile again. "Dont worry about anything. Everything will work out, I promise you" she said and smiled once more. Esme was always smiling, except this time it didnt quite reach her eyes. The happiness couldn't mask the sadness & heart break that she felt almost radiate off of Bree. How could any one still smile and mean it completely once they heard her story?
Esme shook her head. "You dont need to repay us. Just remember that all this family wants is to see you happy" she insisted and smiled at her again before she ran her fingers through Bree's hair again. "As long as youre happy, we're happy"
The look in Esme's eyes showed this to be true. All she wanted from her children was for them to be happy for eternity. That was one reason why she wanted Bella to be changed, just like Carlisle had said. She also couldn't risk losing her son. Her heart would break like it had the moment she lost her biological son. SO much, she had jumped off that bridge.

I’ll try to be happy,” she said, though it would be hard to even try. Diego was brilliant, and just like all good things, he had come to an end too quickly. She’d only known him for one day and she’d had no idea how much one person could affect her. He’d been her rock in the swirling craziness of the newborns; he was the only person who was sane. Fred was too, but that was different. They were friends. Diego and Bree were more than that.
Bree opened her eyes again, and bit hard on her lip. She must stay strong for Esme. The mother of the Cullen family wanted her to be happy, so she should at least try. Bree sighed and tried to imagine letting all the pain out with her breath. Of course it wouldn’t be that simple. It would take time, but she didn’t think she’d get over it at all. A vampire’s mind never forgot anything, so the memories would be there forever. The Cullen family and their ways helped distract her, but there was always a bit of her mind that was grieving for Diego. And that part would always be a part of her no matter how much time passed.
Bree tried to think of something to say to Esme, but she didn’t know anything. Ever since Diego had gone, it was like she knew nothing. Since Esme wouldn’t accept her thanks and Bree didn’t know what to say, she settled for the only gesture she could think of. A hug. Bree turned her body around to face Esme and wrapped her arms around her, hugging her lightly. She whispered ”thank you” anyway, thinking that it would be a little awkward if she randomly hugged her without saying anything. She let her go, the scent of her adoptive mother fresh in her nostrils.
