Jacob looked across the horizon, not really thinking about anything as the wind ruffled his russet brown fur. These days, all he did was think the wolf way, where the only pain was hunger. He couldn't bear to think of the girl he'd fallen in love with, the wedding, or her dwindling time as a human. He didn't know what day it was, only that it had been a while since he'd last been near La Push.
Jacob didn't know why he had come back to La Push, maybe he'd subconsciously drifted here to check on Bella. But he knew the danger from the red haired leech and that army was gone. Well, nearly gone. There was a new Cullen, a newborn who had surrendered during the fight. How stupid of them! Jacob had seen what newborns could do, no matter that the leech was small. One lapse of concentration and Bella would be dead. Did Edward not care about her at all?
Jacob stood up, his big paws making footprints in the dirt. It had been a while since he'd eaten anything, and he suddenly realised how empty his stomach was. His instincts took over, and his wolf senses scanned the area for any animals that would be great for a quick meal. Ahh, a deer. Quick and simple, like take away. Jacob began to stalk the animal, hearing its heartbeat around one hundred matres away. He closed the distance and started circling in colplete silence with the deer blissfully unaware, just staring into nothingness.
Jacob's mind was pulled away from the hunt from a faint shimmering in the air. Someone was phasing. It triggered the painful memories that Jacob would rather forget, and he tried his best to block whichever one of his pack members from his mind as he tried to focus back on his hunting. Jacob felt guilty every time he ignored one of his friends (with the exception of Leah), but they all knew what he went through. They'd seen it in his mind and knew how much he wanted to be alone, and most of the time they did. It was only the Clearwater kids who bothered him now. Seth begged him to come back to La Push, telling him that Bella wanted him to. And Leah... well, Leah was just being Leah. He hoped that whoever had just phased wasn't one of them, because Jacob knew that neither Seth nor Leah would leave him alone.
